GREENSTEIN ANTI-STALKING BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

GREENSTEIN ANTI-STALKING BILL SIGNED INTO LAW
Expands State's Anti-Stalking Statutes to Keep Pace With Changing Technology

(TRENTON) - Legislation Assemblywoman Linda R. Greenstein sponsored to strengthen the state's anti-stalking statutes was signed into law Saturday by Gov. Jon Corzine.

"Stalking is a serious crime that can destroy a person's life and leave lasting emotional scars," said Greenstein (D-Middlesex/Mercer). "Now the state can do more to protect people from unwanted, unrelenting and unnerving attention."

The new law also was sponsored by Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) and Assemblywoman Elease Evans (D-Passaic).

It expands the definitions and enhance the penalties found in the state's stalking statute and broadens the legal definition of stalking to include "directly, indirectly, or through third parties, by any action, method, device, or means, following, monitoring, observing, surveilling, threatening, or communicating to or about, a person, or interfering with a person's property; repeatedly committing harassment against a person."

"The Internet and e-mail have expanded the arsenal of tools available to stalkers," said Greenstein. "To effectively combat stalking, we must have on the books a law that keeps pace with the times."

The legislation also was sponsored by Assemblyman Eric Munoz (R-Union).

The law takes effect immediately.
