GREENWALD THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND LAWSUIT TO OVERTURN A.C. SPORTS BETTING BAN'Fighting for Legalized Pro-Sports Gaming Is A Play New Jersey Can't Afford Not to Run'(VOORHEES) - Assemblyman Louis Greenwald said he fully supports a lawsuit filed today by Senator Ray Lesniak and three of the state's horse racing associations that seeks to invalidate federal law that has blocked professional sports wagering from being offered at Atlantic City's casinos.Greenwald is a sponsor of legislation to give New Jersey's voters the ability to decide in a November General Election referendum whether Atlantic City's casinos should be able to accept in-person wagers solely on professional sports. The measure overwhelmingly passed the Assembly in Feb. 2008.Greenwald (D-Camden) released the following statement:"While some will say Senator Lesniak is throwing a 'Hail Mary' pass, I stand alongside him unequivocal in the belief that fighting for legalized pro-sports gaming is a play New Jersey can't afford not to run."Sports betting already occurs in Atlantic City and in practically every other state in the union - except that the only ones profiting are offshore corporations or organized crime."Current federal law serves no purpose other than to allow illegal sports book operations to proliferate and flourish."Ever since their inception, Atlantic City's casinos have scored big for taxpayers, senior citizens, and residents with disabilities."We would be doing a disservice to every program that benefits from Atlantic City's regulated and licensed games by sitting idly by and allowing the millions of dollars already being made on sports books to continue to flow only into the pockets of criminals."
