Kean and Corodemus hit the airwaves with a negative campaign ad that makes things up
EATONTOWN-Assemblymen Sean Kean and Steve Corodemus have started campaigning in earnest the only way they know how - by lying.
"After a combined 17 years in the Legislature, Assemblymen Kean and Corodemus are banking their entire reelection campaign on made up negative attacks," said 11th District Democratic Assembly candidate Matt Doherty. "No mention of their legislative record. No mention of anything that they have done to help the 11th District over the past 17 years. Assemblymen Kean and Corodemus may have intended their ad to generate support for their campaign, but all it really does is give voters one more reason to fire them on Election Day."
According to the Kean and Corodemus ad, Doherty and Reilly have a history of higher taxes and no plan for change, which is an out and out lie. Neither Matt Doherty nor Jim Reilly have ever held elected office and, as a result, could never have raised any tax on any level. Yet, during the eight years that Assemblyman Corodemus served in the Legislature, when the Republicans controlled state government, state debt tripled, state spending increased by a whopping 57 percent, and Assemblyman Corodemus gave himself a 40 percent pay increase.
"To start their television campaign with such baseless accusations, while completely ignoring their legislative records, speaks volumes about the type of campaign that our opponents plan on waging over the next month," said 11th District Democratic Assembly candidate Jim Reilly. "Our opponents can't mention their records because they have consistently failed to provide for the 11th District. So they choose instead to hurl feeble attacks and poorly constructed lies, in a vain attempt to muddy the waters."
Traditional campaign wisdom states that you only go negative as an opening salvo if you are behind in the polls or if you have nothing to run on. Judging by the tone of the Kean and Corodemus ad, both must be true.
