District 39 ad goes negative

The District 39 Republicans’ first television advertisement has raised the ire of their Democratic opponents.

The ad, which is currently airing, insinuates that Democratic state Senate candidate Joe Ariyan received three appointed public jobs after donating thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates. Ariyan is Bergen County’s Public Advocate for Land Use, a public defender in Hillside and commissioner of the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority.

“Joe Ariyan gave tens of thousands of dollars in political contributions then got 3 taxpayer paid jobs,” said the ad. “Pay to play contributions?”

The ad also accused Democratic Assembly candidate Carl Manna of raising property taxes as a Dumont Councilman, and running mate Esther Fletcher of raising spending by 32 percent in River Edge.

The Democrats, who have not yet put out any television ads, responded that the Republicans – state Senator Gerald Cardinale and Assembly incumbents Charlotte Vandervalk and John Rooney – went negative because they did not want to focus on issues important to the district.

"With little to show for their collective 65 years in Trenton, Cardinale, Rooney, and Vandervalk have resorted to partisan mud-slinging and misrepresentation of the facts,” said a statement by Ariyan.

The Democrats’ campaign manager, Jennifer Chirco, called any implication that Ariyan was given his positions in exchange for campaign cash “ludicrous,” and pointed out that Rooney had held three public jobs in the 1980s.

“Joe is dedicated to serving Bergen County, and he’s taken on as many roles as offered to him to ensure that whether it be overdevelopment or advocating as public defender that the needs of the people of Bergen County are met.”

Rooney said that he didn’t feel the need to tout his own accomplishments because, as a long-term incumbent, the district’s voters are already familiar with his record.

“I think it just tells the truth, especially with Ariyan. The guy’s got three taxpayer paid jobs, and they’re appointed, not elected positions,” said Rooney.

Ferriero's Puppet

Ariyan is Ferriero's puppet, why would Bergen want another state senator controlled by a greedy party boss?

Three Cheers

Thank goodness that some Bergen Republicans are for once getting some facts out to the public instead of waiting to respond to BCDO baloney. It's a given that the media will portray it as "negative" to point out the facts. For years, we've never heard the press call the BCDO advertisements as negative no matter how distorted they are.

Cardinale Rocks

The guy isn't afraid to fight. That's why he wins while others in Bergen don't. Let's hope his takin' it to 'em rubs off.

09/19/07 4:32 pm

Does anyone care?

No. This only appeals to the oldest of the old money crowd: i.e., Lance, Kean, Whitman, Bateman, etc. And there ain't a lot of them in the 39th.

09/19/07 4:36 pm

Cardinale stinks as a Senator

What has the guy done since being elected? He's served under both Republican and Democratic governors and in both the majority and minority. He's nothing but a party hack who's held his seat b/c the Dems did not seriously challenge him, until now. Seriously, go to any shopping center in Montvale, Demarest, Park Ridge or Woodcliff Lake and ask someone who their State Senator is. People have no idea who he is because he's done zilch.

He has stopped the dems from stealing the kitchen sink

Cardinale the only ethical senator in Bergen county who tells the truth about Bergens thieves and crooks

BCDO is toast

Normally, I would agree that the corruption issue is not the best way to win. However, given the obvious indignation and arrogance of Ferriero and his band of hacks trying to import Hudson County style politics into Bergen County, the people have had enough. DCDEM claims Cardinale is a hack? The guy is a doctor, a dentist. A house made of glass is in no position to throw stones when the likes of Ferriero, Oury, Coniglio, Sarlo and other embarassments dictate the direction of the Democrats.

09/19/07 5:12 pm

What has Cardinale done?

He's been a Senator since the 1980s (!), including during times when the Republicans were in the majority. For almost 30 years of service, he should have a lengthy record of achievement, including working across the aisle to help the 39th. Has he? Are roads any less congested? Has he fought to protect dwindling open space in Bergen? Are schools less crowded? Did he make it any more affordable to live there? Does he have a vision for the 39th or is he simply concerned about spouting conservative bromides. If not, then he's a hack in my opinion. He was put there by his party and will do anything to please it.

09/19/07 5:35 pm

What has Ferriero done?

If only Ferriero's puppets were in office, then there would be no traffic, no taxes, perfect schools, and tons of open space. Oh no wait. Ferriero is a scumbag so he would have just funneled the money into his own pocket. Yeah lets vote for the Ferriero team.

Cardinale - back alley

One thing Rooney didn't mention was that his OWN town threw him out last year as Mayor. Red Insiders are afraid that Rooney will drag the whole team down - who's kidding whom? Did anyone happen to mention that Joe Ariyan got the Public Defender appointment under a REPUBLICAN administration in River Edge? As far as Ester and Carl go, during their terms as Councilpeople, there have been tremendous increases in the costs of municipalities and services!

If Pay to play and The Dems raise taxes is all they can come up with - they have no case.

If we may explore the (unspoken) thought process of Dems tax and spend by Republicans..... the unmentioned idea is that the Dems maintain Jane Fonda and welfare cheats and run down the local town treasury with these parasites.

Dumont and River Edge do not have this problem at all!

Maybe  Jersey City, Newark or Paterson - but NOT either Carl nor Esther's town.

If they raised taxes, they had no choice in the matter.

Period!

Interesting race to watch

Rooney will weigh the ticket down..hah

Cardinale is outspoken, on everything. However, Ariyan is a BCDO hack, the people in the 39th don't like Joe F. too much. If Bob Gordon was in the 39th and ran then Cardinale would have been done for. Ariyan doesn't have much of a name. The council people have more of a name then he does.

Vandervalk is liked by the independents and has been the highest vote getter in the Assembly races, she will win unless Rooney really does kill the ticket.

njdems are corrupt poster

The chairman has to get on line to be my boss. Let's see, first there's my wife, then my waistline, then there's my son's dentist, then there's etc... I think the chairman is my boss just about number 43 or so. One thing we all have to understand is that NOBODY on this great website is going to change their vote based on a posting. I have never met the chairman, but I will - I had a chance to say hello a while back at a function - but as August Belmont failed to do with Baron Rothschild, so did I.

I serve, but I never bow - too American for bows.

AND the chairman would never ask that. He's too American also!

It's been my observation that when an incumbent doesn't have much of a record to run on the go negative against their opponents. And a message for njdemsarecorrupt. The only reason a person such as yourself stoops to calling someone a "scumbag" is usually because they are ignorant or illiterate. In your case I beleive bothe apply.

There is one other issue than corruption that will get some attention: property taxes. Cardinale and Vandevalk have been making the case that the 39th District gets shafted ever year by the school aid formula and the Democrats have no response because it is true. And, of course, the Democratic legislature put off any consideration of reforming the formula for another year. Under the Democrats, the suburbs get a raw deal all the time, and at least Cardinale is one Republican that will call them on it.

the 39th District gets shafted ever year by the school aid formu

Thanks for admitting Cardinale's useless to the 39th, which is my point exactly. He's had almost 30 years to make a difference and has been unable to do so.

09/20/07 10:21 am

I'll take soomeone who is honest

How is Cardinale supposed to get anything passed in a Democratic legislature? What he can do is spotlight the raw deal that the 39th District gets and he is doing that. As for the relatively few years that the Republicans controlled the legislature, the blame that they didn't do more falls on the shoulders of Donnie D, John Bennett, and th Whitman administration. But at least they rolled back the Florio sales tax increase, instead of rasing taxes as every elected Democratic administration has done for forty years.

If you want to blame Cardinale for not being a go-along-get-along Trenton pol, go right ahead. We've had too many of those in recent years from both parties, and some of them have gone or are going to jail.

The only shot for any reform at all is if the Republicans hang on their 18 senate seats and pick up two more.  A long shot at the moment but otherwise we'll just see more Democratic corruption.

I'd like to know how Ariyan would ever get the Democratic machines in the state to stop treating the 39th District as just a deep pocket to fund other parts of the state, often for corrupt purposes. They are only going to fund virtually his entire campaign.

Democratic ticket in 39

I have to laugh when these BCDO clones scatter the site with mindless chatter about Cardinale or how Rooney is going to drag the ticket to defeat. The three Democrats are 100%, bought and paid for by the BCDO. Three non-entities that can't walk and chew gum much less anything else. Say what you want about Cardinale or Rooney, but neither of them have to call Ortiz to see how they can vote or what color tie to wear! The issue in this race is Ferriero. His unbridled power grabs and complete control of the BCDO where he can install hacks abroad like McNerney, Sarlo, Coniglio, Wagner, O'Brien, Padilla, et al. The list seems endless... The Republicans will win this race because suburbanites don't have the stomach for the machine politics the BCDO wants to install in the 39th and give Ferriero another senator to control.

Demsanddont's

Would that be Rob Ortiz? Oh that's right. The Bergen County Republicans are not "Robbing" so to speak .........just yet.

everyone here keeps talking about the past... whitman this / florio that... tax hikes in '91... this is 2007!! screw the past and worry about how f'd we are RIGHT NOW!!

i can't comprehend how people can see their taxes on EVERYTHING go up and sit back and re-elect the same people over and over again...

( actually, my district is half-way decent... but even so... i will not be voting for any incumbents... at least not now, and probably not for the next 2 decades+ or so if i decide to stay in NJ )

Isn't that the truth! As the exodus by fine minds like this proves, skyrocketing property taxes are the number 1 issue. The Freeholders and Sheriff decide what our taxes are by their spending. Shortway Kahwaty Yudin and Duggan have a 3 word campaign slogan CUT TAXES NOW. You do that and we have a half a chance to retain people in this state. These guys will vote no on any increase in taxes period. Never mind stabilizing taxes they need to be slashed. www.best4bergen.org

Throw Out John Rooney

When will people focus on John Rooney's and Rooney's dirty cronies abusive culture of corruption. They have abused their power and connections to the detriment of other people and that must not be tolerated in society. Democrats have been talking endlessly about Cardinale taking some trips. That is kids play compared to Rooney's dirty cronies abuse of power.

If John Rooney wins, he should thank god and never run again. This definately should be the end of Cardinale as well. Vandervalk is no spring chicken, but will go as long as she wants
