A BRICK TOO FAR

HACKENSACK – In a campaign riddled with errors and inconsistencies, Republicans John Driscoll and Rob Hermansen seem to have topped themselves again. A mail piece released by the two depicts two stern-looking seniors holding up their property tax bill with a moving van sitting behind them. The implication: high property taxes are forcing these two right out of their town. The problem: that town happens to be the Township of Brick, NJ…words which are clearly visible on the lower left hand corner of the piece of paper the woman in the mailer is holding up.

“The sad part is Bob Hermansen didn’t even need to go that far to find people being forced from their homes because of outrageous property tax hikes,” said Freeholder Julie O’Brien. “He could have just asked any one of his neighbors to hold up the bills showing the 21.8% property tax hikes he helped push through in the last 3 years as a Mahwah councilman.”

Brick Township, which is located 77.5 miles away from the county seat of Hackensack, is dominated by Republicans who hold the Office of the Mayor as well as 6 of the 7 seats on the township’s Council.

“Working families in Bergen County are facing real difficulties,” said Freeholder Vernon Walton. “They need elected officials who are getting the work done right here at home, not looking outside the county to make political hay.”

an insult to far

its so obvious that O Brien and Walton are as dumb as two Bricks. The only thing that they can attack is the American way.

Ones Job and the ability to earn a living. The Bergen Voters will show them the door next Tuesday and both O Brien and Walton will have to earn a real living. Maybe there is an opening in a Tabacco, Gun or even the Porno industry for either. They are NOT qualified for any job

Wow

I guess Corzine's property tax plan didn't work out to well for Mahwah Wasn't it 40% reduction in in 4 years??? Perhaps it was all those unfunded state mandates?? These democrats have some gall talking about property taxes. Its a debate Hermansen and Driscoll should be all too happy to have. Walton and O'Brian clearly aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

Anyone offended

by the smug and condescending releases being put out the Dems so far? Frankly, even though I don't care enough about what they say to be bothered, I can see where someone would be offended.

Is it me or do they seem to be more concerned about amusing themselves and in being clever than about the real problems being faced by Bergen County residents; Problems, coincidentally, that the Democrat freeholders either created or exacerbated.

In short, they campaign like they govern. Superficially. Wordplay and cleverness with no substance. They have no record of achievement to campaign on, so they they have opted for gimmicks and cheap laughs.

Yes it's all very funny but what's not funny is how they have "governed" Bergen county into ruin. Voters need to do something about it. Vote the comedy club wannabees out of office and give them more time to amuse themselves. Meanwhile new Republican Freeholders will work harder at finding real solutions to the taxpayers' problems than at coming up with one-liners.

Talking Points

Democrat Playbook: On taxes, point to how TOWNS have had to raise taxes, while the county tax increases have been minimal each year, while "services" like meals-on-wheels have increased.

Reality: The County has their own bank: the BCIA. When they need money, they don't raise taxes and pay for stuff, they just bond it, and forward the costs for "improvements" (like a $4.7M horse barn to future taxpayers). In this way, year-over-year increases seem small, while current spending can be increased.

Bigger Picture: Take money from you today and pay you back from revenues I plan on collecting tomorrow? Ask Bernie Madoff how this works out as a long-run strategy.

Real winners: Sanzari, 'Smiling Joe' Ferriero, and horse-barn-watering-system salesmen.
