(TRENTON) -- Assembly Majority Leader Joseph J. Roberts, Jr., today responded to the Office of Attorney General letter calling into question the legality of Doug Forrester's numerous campaign donations made since he incorporated Heartland Fidelity Insurance Company.
Roberts released the following statement:
"Doug Forrester now is on formal notice that his contributions may be illegal. The only conclusion reached by investigators today was that a criminal conviction may not have been secured at this time.
"This is certainly not the exoneration Doug Forrester had sought, it is a strong admonition to Forrester to stop his flow of contributions to Republican campaigns.
"Republicans wanted an opinion from an authoritative source. Today they received one, and the attorney general's letter does nothing to remove the stain of impropriety from Doug Forrester's contributions.
"I renew my call for all Assembly Republicans to not only cease and desist from spending any of Forrester's tainted campaign cash, but to return it as well."
Roberts noted that complaints lodged with the Election Law Enforcement Commission by more than a dozen Democratic Assembly campaigns -- complaints that were referred to the attorney general -- still are under review.

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep.
