10 Ways In 10 Days: Governor Corzine Has Failed New Jersey, #5

TRENTON - In the final stretch of this critical election, the New Jersey Republican State Committee is reminding voters about Jon Corzine's record of complete failure as Governor. In this campaign, Governor Corzine has promised to double down on the failed policies of his first term and spend the next four years running New Jersey further into the ground. New Jersey can't afford another four years of Governor Corzine's failure, lost jobs, and high taxes.

#5 Sales Tax Pinch

In July 2006, Governor Jon Corzine fought tooth and nail, going as far as to shut down the government, to squeeze overtaxed New Jerseyans with a sales tax increase.  Today, New Jersey’s sales tax is higher than in 35 other states.  New Jerseyans are leaving our state in droves because the crushing tax burden and unemployment rate have made it impossible for many to live here.  After raising taxes by $9 billion, Governor Corzine now wants to raise tolls by 800%, raise the gas tax, and raise income taxes.   After four years of Governor Corzine, New Jerseyans have been left with empty pockets and a one way ticket out of the state.

New Jersey's Sales Tax Rate Is 7.0% (The Tax Foundation, "Updated State and Local Option Sales Tax," 10/16/09)

This Is Higher Than The Sales Tax Burden Of 35 Other States
(The Tax Foundation, "Updated State and Local Option Sales Tax," 10/16/09)

A4901 - Increased sales and use tax from 6% to 7% on July 15, 2006 and expanded base of sales and use tax on October 1, 2006.
