Cryan hints that geography would hurt Menendez chances for VP slot

While many Democrats sing Bob Menendez’s praises and cast him as a great choice for the Vice Presidency, Democratic State Committee Chairman Joseph Cryan took a more down to earth view today of the chances that New Yorker Hillary Clinton would pick a New Jerseyan as her running mate.

“Everyone is excited that Bob Menendez has portrayed himself as a national leader in the campaign, and the fact of the matter is the geography is in question and we’ll have to wait to see who gets the nomination first,” Cryan told PolitickerNJ.com’s Matt Friedman today.

Of course, when George W. Bush picked Dick Cheney in 2000, they were both living in Texas.  And Bill Clinton, the Governor of Arkansas, picked the Senator from an adjacent state, Senator Al Gore of Tennessee, in 1992.

Integrity (or lack thereof) will do him in before geography

Menendez is a Hudson County politician and hasn't ever condemned the criminal governments of Hoboken, Union City, West New York, Weehawkin, North Bergen or Guttenberg.  He was raised on corruption and is as dirty as the day is long.

Sleazy Jersey at its finest.

Well

Legally Cheney lived in Wyoming (The Pres and VP candidates cannot reside in the same state) but yes he was certainly living in Texas. Clinton could pick Gore because Southerners play better in the north than northerners play better in the south. Having one candidate from the Northeast is often a liability. We have not had a President elected from the NE since Kennedy (Keeping in mind that GHWB and GWB are really from Connecticut-but elected from Texas)

All due respect to the junior senator.

He has no chance for the VP slot.

Both Clinton and Obama need a red state Democrat who can carry his or her home state.

Lieberman in 00 failed to help in Florida and probably cost Gore Tennessee, Florida and West Virginia. Edwards couldn't carry North Carolina. This trend of picking bad running-mates needs to end.

When you pick a VP, the premise must be can he or she assume the presidency?

With Menendez, the answer is no.

If it's Clinton, look for her to look to someone like Mark Warner, Evan Bayh or a Bill Nelson. Obama will never accept the second slot.

If Obama gets the nomination, look for him to consider Feinstein of California or possibly reach back to a stateman like figure within the party much like a Mario Cuomo.

He didn't live in Wyoming

He changed his voter registration and legal residence only AFTER he decided to anoint himself the VP candidate....a legal ploy at best.   Everyone knows he really lived in Texas, just as everyone knows he made his money in the oil and war supply business.  But at least back then he was just circumventing the constitution, not totally ignoring it.  If there is a hell he will join George Bush in spending eternity in it.

the cynical view

Hillary's people are floating Menendez as a VP candidate to pander to Hispanics in NJ.

They fear a black/hispanic coalition for Obama could win them quite a few delegates in the urban portions of the state.

Typical Clinton-style politics.
