Corzine interviewing State Treasurer candidates

There are some reports that the Corzine administration is shopping for a new State Treasurer, which could mean that Thomas Shea is preparing to leave his post as Chief of Staff -- with Bradley Abelow as his replacement.

One possible State Treasurer candidate is Judy Lewent, who will retire as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Merck on August 14.  She also serves on the Board of Directors of Dell and Motorola, and as a Trustee of the Rockefeller Family Foundation.  A front office source says that Governor Jon Corzine will meet with Lewent this week.

need a political person

Abelow as Treasurer is a strange pick. COS is a political position, and Corzine needs someone with a political compass. Abelow seems to be a good manager, but does he have the political relationships to move policy forward?

I agree

Abelow is no COS. Hate to see Shea go although I am certain he will be well paid by a Presidential campaign.

Abelow to Front Office To Coordinate Corzine Initiatives

Rumors indeed abound that Shea is preparing to move on, and that Abelow has the inside track on Tom Shea's job. It's the Goldman thingy, with Abelow having been head of operations there.

Little "Goldmanites" have been busy combing State Government, looking for ways to keep the flow of money into the State's coffers, if possible, without having to raise taxes. From the position of Chief of Staff, Abelow can direct what will now become the political operation.

Look for old money-maker state programs to get fresh life as cash cows for often times unrelated Corzine initiatives.

When Shea first took over as Chief of Staff, he noved into friend Jamie Fox's digs in Lambertville, but toward the summer took up residence in the downtown area. The lease, apparently up a few months ago, Shea, according to a neighbor, moved back to Jamie's, which may well give him a temporary location with no need to sign a lease for another year.

Way back when he took over as Chief of Staff, the guess was that Shea would leave in a year or so and return to Florida for a congressional run.

But in the 2006 House race, Democrat Ron Klein narrowly ousted long term incumbent Republican Representative Clay Shaw from Florida's 22d Congressional District, where Shea had had his roots for several years.

So look for Shea to join one of the Presidential campaigns at this point, probably Hillary Clinton's? Shea ran Kerry's Florida operation in '04 from offices in the Ft. Lauderdale area.

For a while, Lambertville Mayor Dave Delvecchio had the word passed around that he was under active consideration for the upcoming vacancy as Chief of Staff.

But Dave may have lowered his sights a bit, perhaps such as competing with Kim Ricketts to fill the vacant chair being kept warm by Charles A. Richman at the Department of Community Affairs. With the Governor promoting his program to build 100,000 new low and moderate income housing units, Dave may have concluded that Community Affairs will become an active place.
