Conaway in danger of losing party support for re-election bid

There is considerable speculation among South Jersey Democratic insiders that Assemblyman Herbert Conaway may get dumped from the Democratic ticket if he seeks re-election to a fifth term next year. Sources say that Conaway has fallen out of favor with key party leaders in Burlington County, and that his refusal to help a resurgence of the local Democratic Party has alienated even some of his longtime supporters. If the Democrats decline to support Conaway's re-election, possible candidates to replace him include: attorney Amy Vasquez, who ran for Congress in 2004 and for Freeholder in 2005; Burlington City Council President Joseph Van Loan; and Sidney Camp of Westhampton.

Conway's Successor

Clearly Rich Sexton is interested in taking Dr. Conway's Assemblt seat. He's on a suicide mission against Jim Saxton but will build a considerable amount of name recognition challenging the long time congressman from Burlington County.

Camden & Gloucester Counties both have new Democrat Sheriff candidates while there is a new body on the Freeholder slot in CAMCO.

Trouble in the Norcross street gang?

Seems like a high turnover rate.

Moorestown Resident Richard Sexton will be disappointed to learn that he does not live in the 7th Legislative District.

Regardless, breaking up Conaway and Connors in the midterms, opposite D. Allen, would probably put the 7th in play for Republicans.

Conoway seems like a class act in Trenton. It would be a shame if this talk of dumping him comes to pass. Also, with tough votes coming on the Corzine tax hikes and budget cuts, why do anything to put the 7th in play.

Wally, at least try to do a little research of the facts instead of just dishing out what those clowns in Camden are feeding you - Ask some questions, Wally...you say "and that his refusal to help a resurgence of the local Democratic Party has alienated even some of his longtime supporters." -

What does that mean Wally? Are you saying Herb Conaway doesen't support the BCDO? Because thats what it sounds like your saying and thats not true at all....

Why don't you do some research and tell the PoliticsNJ readers specifically why Conaway has fallen out of favor and why don't you tell us if the Majority Office is stupid enough to put both assembly seats in the 7th district in play after a 2-1 2005 victory and if they are stupid enough not to have a shot at the senate seat by splitting the ticket...

My opinion is this... if Allen runs again in '07 (which is much more likely than not), I believe the Burlco/Pennsauken organization Dems--AKA District 7--will support an up to now, little known guy (by the public, statewide at least) by the name of Rich Dennison.

He's young, charismatic (i've seen him speak before and he woos a crowd ala john edwards and bill clinton, the latter for whom he worked in the white house speechwriting office) and super smart. He's a lawyer and his family (like Codey's) owns funeral homes all over Burlco (name recognition for certain). Friends have told me that he's already starting to make quite an impression with the Dem organization in the area. I am not, however, aware of the status of his fundraising.

And, I have from good sources that yes, Conaway is far from the guy organization Dems around here want to run for the senate seat. And, as you folks noted, i agree that he may face some trouble gaining their support for even the re-election to his assembly seat. The reasons are plentiful--I won't get into it here but it involves some recalcitrance on his part.

Thus, I think District 7 is going to be a great one to watch next year. Your views?
