Assemblymen tout tax plan to the very seniors they voted to leave out
Burlington— 7th District Assembly candidates Brian Propp and Nancy Griffin today called on Assemblymen Herb Conaway and Jack Conners to come clean about the lack of additional relief for seniors in the Democrats’ property tax plan passed this year.
“In front of a room full of seniors, Conaway and Conners touted this year’s property tax rebate checks as ‘…significant tax relief no matter how you look at it’. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the guts to tell everyone that seniors got no additional relief in this year’s rebates. And, to add insult to injury, these men and women living on fixed incomes are paying the higher sales tax to pay for everyone else’s increased rebate checks. New Jersey’s seniors are hardest hit by the affordability crisis in our state. Conaway and Conners supported a plan that gave our seniors the short end of the stick.”
“This year’s rebate plan was inadequate in so many ways,” said Nancy Griffin. “The Legislature increased taxes, but had to borrow even more money to pay for the plan. There’s no guarantee of relief past this year. But worst of all, it left out those who need property tax relief the most, our seniors living on fixed incomes. Brian and I have a plan to provide real, permanent tax relief by amending the Constitution to cap spending and dedicate the savings to property tax relief. Unlike the Conners and Conaway plan, ours won’t give seniors a raw deal.”
