Barry Funt, candidate for Assembly in District 27 issued a statement today in regard to the Republican leadership’s plan calling for a constitutional amendment to establish the Office of Auditor General. This would be an elected, taxpayer-funded position, created to uncover misspent taxpayer funds.
“This is simply not the answer. Creating another new level of government bureaucracy to root out waste sounds pretty wasteful to me,” Funt said, “This cannot be the first step to curbing New Jersey’s budgetary woes. When our goal is to reduce wasteful spending and eliminate unnecessary government entities, I would never support the creation of a new bureaucracy. To put New Jersey back on track, we must elect citizen candidates who are free from conflicts of interest and who are not looking to line their own pockets when in office."
"An auditor general may poll well, but creating a new bureaucracy is not the responsible answer to this problem. While I support many of the party leadership’s initiatives of the party, this is one that I do not support,” Funt continued, "The creation of one more new office just masks the symptoms of the real problem: a legislature that allows our tax dollars to burn a hole in their pockets."
“We need citizen-candidates who will shake up the legislature by proposing budgetary caps, meaningful reductions in government spending, and a thoughtful reorganization of our taxation practices in order to reduce the burden on New Jersey’s businesses and hardworking families.”
“John McKeon and Mila Jasey have a record of voting in lock step with their party leadership. Their support of Jon Corzine is an obvious example of that. The people of the 27th district deserve representatives who can think independently. We need to get back to the basics to make New Jersey affordable again, for our families and our businesses.”
