BERGMANSON: CORZINE SHOULD VETO A2962 FOR EARTH DAY

Glen Ridge, NJ – Mayor Carl Bergmanson, Jon Corzine’s opponent for Governor in the upcoming Democratic Primary, took the occasion of Earth Day to urge Governor Corzine to veto Assembly Bill 2962, saying the bill will make a bad situation worse.

Bergmanson, the former Mayor of Glen Ridge, said “We all know that the DEP’s clean-up program is failing, but gutting the DEP further and putting the clean-up of New Jersey’s 20,000 toxic waste sites under the control of the very people who made those sites toxic is a recipe for disaster.”

A2962, also known as the Site Remediation Reform Act, which has passed both houses of the legislature, would permit polluters and developers to hire their own consultants to sign-off on toxic waste site cleanups. It is opposed by major environmental groups.

“I understand the frustration that many public officials face when dealing with the DEP’s seemingly endless red-tape and unexplained delays, when I was Mayor, they had me pulling my hair out. But the solution to that is to streamline the process and make sure that they are adequately staffed – not at taxpayer expense, but at the expense of those responsible for the contamination. What we shouldn’t do is put the polluters in charge of their own remediation projects - you would think that after the Wall Street debacle we would have learned our lesson about asking the fox to guard the henhouse.”
