Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo says he will run for re-election in the June Democratic primary, despite losing the support of the local Democratic organiation.
“I am as passionate today about serving my constituents as I have ever been," said the Seton Hall University Law Professor, who served in Gov. Jim Florio's cabinet. "The people of the 29th district know my record of service and my accomplishments. They know me as their strong and experienced advocate. I have every reason to believe they will return me for a seventh term."
Caraballo, the Assembly Speaker Pro-Tempore, lost the backing of his key supporter, Newark political leader Stephen Adubato, Sr. Adubato, along with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, are backing Grace Spencer and Albert Coutinho for Assembly.
The other 29th district Assemblyman, William Payne, had been planning a Senate bid. The incumbent, Sharpe James, has not yet announced his plans -- and may not until the filing deadline passes at 4PM on Monday -- but Payne has been traveling in China with his brother, Rep. Donald Payne, and has made no formal announcement. Adubato and Booker are backing Teresa Ruiz, DiVincenzo's Deputy Chief of Staff, for the Senate.
Caraballo says that Charles Williams will run his campaign.

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Bad Move
The constituent base in Essex county should be very concerned about the influence Mr. Adubato has in elections. If he and the wanna be political boss, Cory Booker have their way, Bill Payne, Fred Caraballo, Ron Rice, Craig Stanley, and Mrs. Truitt will all be replaced. It is laughable that these 2 gentlemen beleive that the 28th and 29th representatives are not serving their constituants well. It is even more laughable that they beleive the individuals they are supporting would make better legislators. (Bilal Beasley, Cleo Tucker)
Mayor Booker says he needs people in Trenton he can work with. That comment is disingenuous at best. The man has been in office for ten months. He has not been around long enough to come to that kind of conclusion. What will Cory do when his candidates lose and he has to work these people. It is very discouraging to see someone who ran on the theme of good government supporting someone like Bilal Beasley over Sen. Rice, or Ralph Caputo over Craig Stanley, or Cleopatra Tucker over Truitt.
At the end of the day Adubato and Booker will be exposed for the political hacks that they are. I guess Cory is the air apparent to the North Ward Center kigdom. Good for him!
