(Mount Laurel): Mary Anne Reinhart, Shamong Councilwoman and Democratic Candidate for Burlington County Freeholder today applauded the decision handed down by the state Council on Local Mandates which will no longer require Shamong or 12 other municipalities in Burlington County to pay for police coverage. "When we filed the complaint in July, many people were skeptical that rural Burlington County municipalities could prevail against the state. This is a crucial victory for taxpayers. In these tough economic times, our residents deserve the best services possible without increasing taxes and that's exactly what they'll get," said Reinhart. According to today's Burlington County Times, the Municipalities would have been required to contribute $12.6 million for the police coverage. The Municipalities who will receive state police coverage without having to pay additional taxes are: Bass River, Fieldsboro, Hainesport, New Hanover, North Hanover, Pemberton Borough, Shamong, Southampton, Springfield, Tabernacle, Washington Township, Woodland and Wrightstown. "Here in Shamong, our residents would have had to pay over $200,000 for this continued service. We're in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and the last thing we should be asking our residents to do is pay higher taxes," said Reinhart. "I am running for Freeholder on the ‘Straight A's team for Change' with Chris Brown and Tim Tyler because we want to make Burlington County more Affordable, Accessible and Accountable. Keeping our residents safe without raising taxes is exactly the type of leadership I will bring to the Burlington County Freeholder Board as we change the way our government does business," Reinhart said. ###
