Reckless Spending in the Abbott Districts

“The Corzine administration needs to take action and change the way schools are funded in New Jersey” commented Bruce Meringolo.

Last week the Assembly questioned Governor Corzine’s education commissioner on questionable education spending that included over $800,000 in catering charges for the Newark school district.  “The Mountainside schools in my district receive less state funding then the Newark system spends in catering! How can we, as the taxpayers of New Jersey, allow that type of wasteful spending to occur when our districts are cutting staff and programs to meet mandated state spending caps! Our system of school funding is broken and it needs to be fixed now!” said Bruce Meringolo.

The department of education tried to pass the buck when it noted the local school board is the body that has the ultimate responsibility regarding budgets.  The NJ state government can not simply wash its hands of this waste as it is the state which hands out billions of dollars of tax payer money to the Abbott schools.  It is time for Trenton to accept accountability for its actions!  There is no accountability in the Abbott districts because it is not their money and there are no incentives for them.

“We cannot control the runaway property taxes we face in this state without addressing the abuse that is rampant in the Abbott schools. The only way to help the taxpayers of New Jersey and the children of the Abbott districts is to create a fair system of school funding and expand the school voucher program in the Abbott districts!” added Mr. Meringolo.

Mr. Meringolo is a commercial real estate agent with Newmark Associates, Inc out of Whippany, NJ and is running for NJ Assembly in 21st LD with his core issues of fair school funding, lower taxes on individuals and business, and the elimination of COAH. For more information visit the campaign website at www.ElectBruce.com and follow Bruce Meringolo on twitter at Bruce_Meringolo.
