(SOMERS POINT, October 10) – New Jersey Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce joined First Legislative District GOP Assembly nominees Mike Donohue and John McCann, Somers Point Mayor Jack Glasser, and Somers Point Council candidates Tom Smith and Howard Dill at the “24: Putting Taxpayers First Rally” in Somers Point, and condemned Gov. Corzine for his plan to balance next year’s budget on the backs of middle class taxpayers.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, for the next 24 days – you can’t change Trenton until you change the people IN Trenton,” said DeCroce. “The Democrats who have been running this state for the last seven and a half years have had their chance, and what have they accomplished? Our property taxes are the highest in the nation, our state government is spending $7 billion per year more than when Gov. Corzine took office, and our unemployment is at its highest level in 32 years.
“Here in the First District,” he continued, “ you have two Democrats who like to talk like Republicans when Election Day nears, but who go back to their party caucus when they get to Trenton. Why, we just found out that Nelson Albano and Matt Milam each accepted $16,400 from a Democrat Assemblywoman who was running to become Speaker of the Assembly – how can they try to suggest they’re ‘independent?’ They voted with Jon Corzine 95 percent of the time!
“If the voters of the First District want to send representatives to Trenton who will REALLY fight for lower taxes and less government, they should send Mike Donohue and John McCann. It’s just that simple.”
“Alex DeCroce has been a strong leader, and has become a good friend,” said Donohue. “He understands the game Gov. Corzine is playing, and he understands the game Nelson Albano and Matt Milam are playing WITH the Governor.
“Jon Corzine’s admission to the Newark Star-Ledger editorial board earlier this week – his acknowledgement that if he’s reelected, there will be a continuation of what he once called a ‘temporary’ income tax surcharge, and that he’ll underfund the state pension fund by $2 billion – is exactly what everyone expected. Instead of cutting waste and controlling state spending, they will stick struggling middle class families with an even heavier tax burden. This is just more of the same from a Governor who has consistently punished taxpayers for his own fiscal mismanagement.”
“The fact families are being crushed by the heaviest tax burden in the nation obviously means nothing to Corzine and the Democrats,” McCann added. “High taxes got us into this problem in the first place. How is it that anyone could think even higher taxes are the answer to this problem? That’s nuts – it will only make matters worse. What could they possibly be thinking? They haven’t learned anything from their mistakes?
“Corzine and his allies in the Legislature keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again, hoping that next time the outcome will be different,” observed Donohue. “That’s a sure-fire recipe for failure and more pain for taxpayers.”
“It’s time for Corzine to stop jeopardizing the retirement security of thousands of public workers,” McCann continued, referring to the governor’s intention to cut the state’s pension contribution by $2 billion next year. “He has condemned this practice, but he keeps doing it himself. His hypocrisy is beyond belief.”
