(OCEAN CITY, September 4) – First Legislative District GOP Assembly nominees Mike Donohue and John McCann – responding to the announcement earlier today by GOP Assemblymen Vince Polistina and John Amodeo of a 10-point program to revitalize the Atlantic City region – pledged their support for efforts to spur job growth efforts not just in the Atlantic City area, but throughout all of South Jersey.
“Small business is the engine of job creation,” said Donohue, “and that’s especially true here in the southern part of the state, where tourism is the lifeblood of our economy. But the Democrats who have run Trenton for the last eight years seem not to understand that. Their 115 tax increases and ever-more-burdensome business regulations have made it virtually impossible for entrepreneurs to flourish. It’s no wonder New Jersey’s unemployment rate is higher than that of our neighboring states, and it’s no wonder that hundreds of thousands of people are leaving our state.
“A significant job-growth proposal puts the focus right where it should be,” Donohue continued. “The answer is not going to be found in Trenton – the answer is going to be found by unleashing the entrepreneurial talents and ambitions of New Jersey’s finest. Vince and John understand that more often than not, the best thing Trenton can do is get out of the way, and we laud them for their work on this front.”
“We’re blessed to live in a state with the natural resources we enjoy,” added McCann. “There’s no reason in the world Atlantic City shouldn’t be one of the great get-away vacation destinations. By putting together a smart mix of tax credits and an easing of overly burdensome casino regulations, Vince and John have created a package that will grow business, enhance the tourists’ vacation experience, and bring new revenues to the area.
“Cape May and Cumberland counties, too, should join in the job revitalization efforts,” said McCann. “Based on my experience with small businessmen throughout South Jersey, I can tell you that the words they want to hear from Trenton are simple, and they tend to be couched in the negative – like ‘We’re NOT going to fine you,’ and ‘We’re NOT going to hike your taxes again.’
“Mike Donohue and I have been walking the First District for months now, meeting with entrepreneurs and small businessmen where they live and work,” McCann continued. “All over the district, we hear the same stories of trouble dealing with Trenton, trouble dealing with the DEP, trouble dealing with the bureaucracy. But you can’t change Trenton until and unless you change the PEOPLE in Trenton – and that’s why Mike and I are running. Mike Donohue and John McCann mean BUSINESS.”
