Services for Bill McDowell, who became the first Bergen County Executive in 1986, will be held at 10AM on Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington. McDowell, 80, passed away on Friday.
McDowell served as a North Arlington Councilman and Mauor, as Executive Director of the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission unders Governor William Cahill and Brendan Byrne, and as a two-term Bergen County Sheriff. When Bergen County changed their form of government in 1986, McDowell ran for County Executive. He defeated then-State Senator Matthew Feldman by a wide margin and helped Republicans win all seven Freeholder seats. He did not seek re-election to a second term in 1990.
Viewings will be held from 7-9 PM on Tuesday and from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Wednesday at the Parrow Funeral Home in North Arlington. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and to Bright Side Manor, the assisted living center where McDowell lived.Â
