GOVERNOR CORZINE SHOULD HEED OWN ADVICE AND PUT MORATORIUM ON NEW PAYROLL TAXES DUE ON JANUARY 1ST
Assemblyman Jay Webber (R, Morris & Passaic), Chairman of the Assembly’s Taxpayer Protection Caucus, responded today to Governor Corzine’s suggestion that Americans would benefit from a payroll tax holiday. News reports quote the Governor Corzine as stating, “The most onerous tax, the most regressive tax that everybody pays are the payroll taxes, and it seems to me that if you wanted to actually help middle-class Americans, that would certainly be the place that I would go.”
“Once again the Governor demonstrates that he has no coherent or consistent plan for New Jersey’s struggling families and our economy,” stated Assemblyman Webber. “The Governor offers rhetoric about a payroll tax holiday, while just last Spring he imposed a new payroll tax on New Jerseyans, which is set to hit them on January 1st, the paid-leave tax,” stated Assemblyman Webber.
“Payroll taxes are onerous and regressive, and that is exactly why the Governor should not have signed the paid-leave tax in the first place, and should impose a moratorium on the tax, and the whole program, immediately. After all, the Governor himself now acknowledges that this ‘onerous’ and ‘regressive’ tax hurts families, entrepreneurs, and our struggling economy. Fortunately, the new year also will bring the chance for new leadership in Trenton,” concluded Assemblyman Webber.
