“RANDALL SEEKS COUNTY-WIDE SUPPORT
TO KEEP CONTINENTAL ARENA OPEN

Hackensack, NJ – Bergen County Freeholder Elizabeth “Lisa Randall is rallying support to keep the Continental Arena operating even after the Devils Arena is built in Newark.

Randall is introducing a resolution this week asking the freeholder board to demand the New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority and Gov. Corzine keep the Bergen arena operating. She is asking all 70 mayors in the county to sign on to similar resolutions.

“It is important that Bergen County speak with one voice and communicate our desires to retain the access to a sports and entertainment arena within in our borders, said Randall.

The arena has been operating in the Meadowlands for 25 years and has been home to a number of entertainment and sporting events. “The people of Bergen County have come to rely on the Continental Arena as a convenient source for entertainment; there is no reason to lose it to the demands of officials from the Devils organization or the City of Newark, said the freeholder.

Randall noted that the arena provides jobs for county residents as well as a local entertainment venue that “the largest county in the state should not be without.

Randall said giving Newark a monopoly on an entertainment arena is unwise.
“Economic competition is always good and in this case it is a safeguard. No one knows, at this point, if the Devils Arena will be successful or not, so why destroy an existing arena that ultimately may prove more viable than the one in Newark.

Randall pointed out that Bergen County has gotten so little out of the massive redevelopment plans in the meadowlands - namely the Xanadu mega mall -- that the failure of the county to speak out forcefully to keep the Continental Arena open, “would be further dereliction of the county’s duties to protect the interests of the people of Bergen County.

Randall noted that Bergen County will receive no tax revenue from the massive Xanadu mall and nothing from the proposed new, privately owned Giants-Jets stadium. “Bergen County has been totally absent from the bargaining table when it came to the meadowlands redevelopment. It would be criminal to be silent while others determine the fate of the Continental Arena.
