NEW ERA BEGINS FOR BERGEN COUNTY PARKS

‘Exchange of Keys’ Marks Final Phase of Development for Crown Jewel of Bergen

HACKENSACK – A momentous occasion for County residents took place this past Sunday. During a ceremony before dozens of onlookers the Bergen County Improvement Authority formally turned over the ‘keys’ to Overpeck Park to the Bergen County Parks Department. This simple gesture signaled the beginning of the final phase in turning several areas which had been used for landfill into a pristine public park capable of providing modern recreational facilities to residents throughout Bergen County.

“I am extraordinarily pleased to see this project finally coming to fruition,” said Freeholder Julie O’Brien. “The seeds for this project were planted a long time ago and, with an extraordinary effort from County Executive McNerney, I am proud to say the Freeholder Board played a pivotal role in helping them to grow.

During the 1950’s several municipalities, including Ridgefield Park, Leonia, Teaneck and Palisades Park, contributed municipal land for the creation of a large county park. After languishing for decades, the Freeholder Board and the McNerney Administration started preliminary work in 2003. After careful planning and necessary environmental remediation, the park needs only some minor finishing touches before it takes it’s place as the crown jewel of Bergen County.

“I have no doubt that Overpeck will become the Central Park of Bergen County,” said Freeholder Vernon Walton. “What is about to be completed there will pay dividends for Bergen’s families for years to come.”

Horticulture or TAXonomy?

The only seeds Freeholder Julie O'brien knows anything about are those grow our taxes!

..."the beginning of the final phase in turning several areas which had been used for landfill"?? Thankfully, this sounds like the coming freeholder election. It'll be interesting to see how much more of OUR money Julie and Vernon can spend in less than 30 days.

Canadian Geese

are taking over all Bergen County Parks. Guess that the Bergen County Freeholders are blind as they produce more excriment than the GEESE
