Beck urges Attorney General to revoke permit that allows Best Liquors to continue operating

Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck today sent letters to Attorney General Anne Milgram and her subordinate, the Director of the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Jerry Fischer, asking them to revoke the ad interim permit under which Best Liquors of Red Bank is currently allowed to operate pending the outcome of the shop’s appeal to have it’s liquor license reinstated.

“The Borough of Red Bank has deemed Best Liquors to be a menace to the community and a threat to our children,” said Beck, R-Mercer and Monmouth.  “As such, I hope the State will side with Red Bank and preclude Best Liquors from endangering our children through the illegal sale and distribution of alcohol.”

Beck’s letters to Attorney General Milgram and Director Fischer are important because Beck formerly served as a Red Bank councilwoman and rumors of the store’s illicit activities were just beginning percolate during her tenure.  Beck said the shop is currently being permitted to make use of its revoked license pending the State’s decision on its appeal, but that Director Fischer has the authority to bar the store from operating.

“Unfortunately, Best Liquors has a history of violating the law.  Even as it is appealing Red Bank’s decision to revoke its license, a minor was able to obtain alcohol at the shop as recently as last week,” Beck said.  “If it wasn’t clear before that that Best Liquors had failed to uphold its responsibilities to the Red Bank community, it’s all too clear now.  Best Liquors should be forced to cease operating without delay."

In addition to the formal charges that have been filed against Best Liquors for selling alcohol to minors, there have also been numerous other quality of life complaints from area residents concerning the store.
