Kersey and Bernard call for Morals/Ethics clauses in all contracts

In today's climate, failure to protect taxpayers is governmental malpractice

In light of the events yesterday in Lumberton in which indicted and arrested Lumberton Township Manager Dan Van Pelt had refused to resign, and the all-Republican Township Committee's decision to fire Van Pelt was not without an astonishing 90 days with pay, Kersey and Bernard are calling on the Freeholders and all municipal governments to include a morals/ethics clause in every public contract.

This clause would allow public employers to immediately fire for cause any employee under contract for improper conduct including for arrest or indictment without having to continue paying the individual with tax dollars.

"This is not some typical termination that requires severance," said Kersey. "Van Pelt was arrested following indictment for allegedly accepting a bribe in one of the ugliest corruption cases in our State's history. Taxpayers should not be forced to continue paying this corrupt individual. They've thrown enough hard-earned money at him already."

"As if it wasn't bad enough that the all-Republican Committee in Lumberton gave Van Pelt a $90,000 a year taxpayer funded position initially, now they tell us there is a statute that allows him to be paid for 3 more months, said Bernard. "That is completely unacceptable. We are calling for our plan to be adopted immediately. In today's climate, failure to protect taxpayers is governmental malpractice."
