Why Oliver likely won't run for the U.S. Senate in 2014

Short of Newark Mayor Cory Booker imploding between now and 2014, or powerful Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo not running for re-election, Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-34) would have to go seriously rogue in order to run for the U.S. Senate.

Up for re-election in 2014, DiVincenzo wants to be able to run on the line with Booker in a Democratic Primary.

He doesn't want to back Oliver or U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6), for example, in the U.S. Senate race, and then have to worry about his old nemesis state Sen. Dick Codey (D-27) and attendant Joe D. antagnonists forging an aliance with Booker off the line.

DiVincenzo and his inner circle feel they already flattened Codey. They don't want to give Booker the chance to resurrect him.

The county executive wants Booker on the line with himself.

Short of Booker and/or DiVincenzo not running or Oliver going completely off the reservation, she can't run for the U.S. Senate in 2014.

Of course, there's a lot of time between now and the 2014 Democratic Primary...
