Sources: Diegnan in trouble

Democrats in the 37th District may not be the only incumbents in store for a primary fight, according to party sources.

With the shakeup in District 18 created by the gubernatorial run of state Sen. Barbara Buono of Metuchen, Assemblyman Pat Diegnan of South Plainfield is struggling tonight to find support in his party.

Assemblyman Peter Barnes of Edison has the requisite organizational edge to land the Senate seat, but the glut of names jockeying for the Assembly - and internal warnings about the consequences of not having a woman on the ticket - puts Diegnan in jeopardy, sources say.
