RUFF TO CARELESS CONOVER: "SIGN THE AFFIDAVIT"
Careless Conover's True Lies Campaign in Full Swing
Egg Harbor Township – The Executive Director of the Atlantic County Democrats, Ron Ruff today stood outside the Legislative office of Assemblyman Kirk Conover and challenged Conover to set the record straight once and for all about his failure to pay property taxes and mortgage bills on time by signing an affidavit.
Two weeks ago Ruff assailed Conover for failing to pay his property taxes and mortgage bills on time, and Conover responded by slandering Ruff. Ruff today continued to make Conover's tax ills the focus of his attackscriticizing Conover for having no credibility and exhibiting no integrity.
"Kirk Conover paid his property tax bills a combined 790 days late while South Jersey residents were being forced to move out of their homes because of high property taxes," said Ruff. "And to make matters worse, Conover didn't apologize for his mistakes, but instead he responded for his careless behavior by calling me a liar."
"Today I am challenging Mr. Conover to sign this affidavit and set the record straight once and for all about his failure to pay property taxes and mortgage bills on time," said Ruff. "Conover can no longer continue running a "True Lies" campaign. He needs to be held accountable."
Local, state and federal documents released by Ruff documented Conover's tax problems during his tenure. Conover's tax records read like a rap sheet.
· In 1988, Conover was sued for more than $37,400 in unpaid mortgage bills on an Indiana Ave property.
· In 1983, he was sued by a creditor for failing to pay over $25,000 on a mortgage for property on Oriental Avenue.
· The state of New Jersey and Atlantic City have filed at least seven liens against him for debt totaling at least $30,869.
· The IRS filed federal tax liens against Conover for tax debts totaling $11,455.
· Conover's business, Absecon Island Investments, lost its corporate charter for non payment of franchise taxes.
"How can we expect Conover to manage our money in Trenton when he has terribly failed to manage his own?" asked Ruff. "Kirk Conover is part of the problem, and we need solutions."
"Conover's failure to provide property tax relief to South Jersey residents comes as no surprise. His irresponsible behavior illustrates why he hasn't been able to lower our property taxes while he's been in Trenton ," said Ruff.
"While Conover is getting sued for his failure to pay taxes, Democrats will work hard to make sure that New Jersey residents get the relief they deserve. In addition, only the Democrats support a Citizen's Convention on property taxes that will change the way taxes are collected once and for all. It is the most comprehensive plan to provide South Jersey residents with the relief they need.
