STENDER, PANTER, WHELAN: NEW POLL NUMBERS SHOW NEED TO SEND MESSAGE ON IRAQ TO BUSH
(TRENTON) - Citing a new Monmouth University Poll that found widespread disapproval of President Bush's handling of Iraq among New Jersey residents, Assembly members Linda Stender, Michael Panter, and Jim Whelan said the Legislature needs to send a clear message of opposition to Bush's "troop surge" strategy. The Monmouth University Polling Institute today released findings of a new survey that found 74 percent of New Jersey residents disapprove of President Bush's handling of the Iraq situation and 64 percent of residents believe Congress should block funding for more troops.
Stender (D-Union), Panter (D-Monmouth) and Whelan (D-Atlantic) have introduced legislation (AJR-132) that would put the Legislature on record in voicing "overwhelming opposition" to the President's planned troop escalation.
"The latest polls solidify the Legislature's need to send a clear and unequivocal message to President Bush," said Stender. "New Jersey will not allow more brave men and women in uniform to be put at risk while this administration ignores sound military and diplomatic counsel against troop escalation."
"This poll shows that a wide cross-section of New Jersey residents oppose Bush's war," said Panter. "More and more, New Jersey residents are saying they are fed up with the Iraq situation and they want our nation's military personnel taken out of harm's way."
"For nearly four years, we have watched more than 153,000 members of our Armed Forces perform their duty to our country bravely and without complaint," said Whelan. "For nearly four years, we have watched the anxiety of friends and family increase as the level of violence and death toll in Iraq creeps ever higher. We have a duty to help Congress draw a line of opposition and send a message to the President that 'enough is enough.'"

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone.

Glad to see our Democrats in Trenton are as short sighted, self-
Glad to see our Democrats in Trenton are as short sighted, self-interested, and anti-military as their cohorts in Washington. I guess it is part of the genes in Democrats; they are resolved to ensure we lose this war.
It is bad enough that our Senators and Governor are steadfast in their work against American (and Iraqi) victory, now those elected to reform property taxes and ethics are trying to be commander in chief of the COuntry. I guess they have access to better intelligence, have better military training and experience, and are more qualified to lead our military. .... And, for those of you who will take the last comment as an opportunity to say they are better qualified than our President, remember, it is our military leaders who are making the strategies and plans - not GWB. He follows their instructions. As for those who say the military leaders are against the plan for victory, you would be incorrect in that the new leaders are those who wrote the plan.
It is about time that everyone starts to support a goal toward victory and stop running from the enemy; such will only embolden them and lead to greater harm in the future.
I think that Stender the Spender, Michael Panter and Jim Whelan
I think that Stender the Spender, Michael Panter and Jim Whelan need to butt out of national affairs and focus on what they're supposed to be focusing on which is a solution to the state's property tax and cost of living woes.
Start trying to find ways to clean up the mess you helped make before you go running off to Washington yelling "OOOOH, OOOOOH I HATE BUSH TOO!!!"
