VAN DREW/FISHER/ALBANO BILL NAMING ROUTE 55 AS 'VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY' ADVANCES
(TRENTON) - Legislation Assemblymen Jeff Van Drew, Douglas H. Fisher and Nelson Albano sponsored to dedicate New Jersey Route 55 as "Veterans Memorial Highway" was approved by the Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee today.
"The brave men and women who have fought for our freedoms and our country since revolutionary times more than deserve this simple token of our thanks," said Assemblyman Van Drew (D-Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland).
The bill (A-1036) would appropriate $2,500 to the Department of Transportation to rename, resign and rededicate Route 55 as "Veterans Memorial Highway." Currently, New Jersey has no roadways that are dedicated to all veterans.
"We have roads dedicated to veterans of World War II, Viet Nam and Korea, but no highway that is dedicated to the memory of all veterans," said Assemblyman Fisher (D-Cumberland/Gloucester/Salem). "This legislation would remedy that oversight."
"This is a simple and effective way for all of us to show our veterans, past and present, and the brave men and women fighting for our freedoms worldwide that we appreciate their sacrifices to keep us safe, secure and free," said Assemblyman Albano (D-Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland).
The committee approved the bill 12 to 0. It now heads to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post the bill for a floor vote.

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone.
