Assembly Democrats News Release

VAN DREW, ALBANO MEASURE DESIGNATING ROUTE 9 AS 'POLICE UNITY TOUR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY' ADVANCES

(TRENTON) - The Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee today released legislation Assemblymen Jeff Van Drew and Nelson T. Albano sponsored to designate Route 9 in Cape May County as the "Police Unity Tour Memorial Highway."

"Police officers put their lives in danger every day and there is no state-sanctioned process for commemorating the sacrifices and contributions of police officers," said Van Drew (D-Cape May).

The Van Drew, Albano measure (A-3718) would designate New Jersey Route 9 in Cape May County as the "Police Unity Tour Memorial Highway" and designate $2,500 for appropriate signage.

The Police Unity Tour was created by Florham Park Police Officer Patrick P. Montuore in May of 1997 to raise public awareness and honor the memory of police officers who have died in the line of duty.  Members participate in an annual four-day fundraising bicycle ride from the Florham Park Police Department to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

"The Police Unity Tour works to honor the memory of those officers who have selflessly given their lives in the line of duty," said Albano (D-Cumberland).  "By naming a portion of Route 9 for their efforts, we are helping to do the same."

The committee released the measure unanimously.  It now heads to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post it for a floor vote.
