(JERSEY CITY) -- Assemblyman Louis M. Manzo today announced the introduction of legislation that would allow the Jersey City Incinerator Authority to change its antiquated and misleading name to a more modern and precise title: the Jersey City Environmental Authority.
"The Jersey City Incinerator Authority hasn't burned a speck of trash in more than three decades," said Manzo (D-Hudson). "The authority's name has become the Oldsmobile of public agencies. In the parlance of the here and now, the authority's name needs a makeover."
Manzo said the name of Jersey City Environmental Authority would more accurately reflect the services the authority actually provides to Jersey City residents.
His measure (A-2847) would revise the 1948 state statute that was enacted to create the Jersey City Incinerator Authority as a municipal agency. The bill would permit the agency to change its name to "environmental authority."
Such a name change still would require a majority vote of the authority's membership. The measure also would require state Secretary of State and Jersey City's governing body to be notified of the name change, if it were to take place.
Manzo said "environmental authority" is more in line with the agency's current duties of collecting and disposing residential trash, street sweeping, snow plowing, and other quality-of-life service-providing endeavors.
"Let's face facts: the name Jersey City Incinerator Authority just doesn't cut it anymore," Manzo said. "It sounds like something from the Jurassic period."
The bill was formally introduced Monday and referred to the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee.

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep.
