CONAWAY: SCHOOL FUNDING FORMULA SUCCESS HINGES
ON ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF PER-PUPIL COSTS

(TRENTON) -- Assemblyman Herb Conaway, M.D. (D-Burlington/Camden), co-chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on Public School Funding Reform, today said that the success of any new school funding formula is contingent upon an accurate calculation of the per-pupil cost of public education.Following a hearing of the joint committee at which legislators heard testimony from education expert Dr. John Augenblick, state education Commissioner Lucille Davy, and state Department of Education school funding expert Allen Dupree on efforts to arrive at a per-pupil cost figure, Conaway released the following statement:

"Before we consider any new way to invest taxpayer dollars in our public schools, we must know how much educating our children actually costs.

"The greatest consideration must be given to accurately and confidently determining the per-pupil cost of public education.

"Otherwise, any funding formula will be doomed to the same fate as past, failed models."
