Assemblyman Calls Shock Jock's Racially Charged Comments
Offensive to African-Americans & Women
(PATERSON) - Assemblyman Alfred E. Steele today called for the immediate resignation of nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Don Imus for racially repugnant and sexist comments he made about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
Saying a two-week suspension of Imus' daily radio program does not address the pain the shock jock has caused, Steele said Imus should call it a career and leave his morning microphone to another individual who would never hurl racially charged invectives at African-Americans.
"There was nothing humorous about Don Imus' insulting words regarding the Rutgers women basketball team," said Steele (D-Paterson). "This is not the first time Don Imus has engaged in such reprehensible commentary but it certainly should be the last time. He has shown the nation that he is unworthy to be on the public airwaves."
Steele said Rutgers' women basketball players brought honor and pride to their school, the State of New Jersey, and all women in general by overcoming great odds to advance to the final game of the national collegiate basketball championship tournament despite having underdog status.
"At what may be the finest hour for these young women, Don Imus' statements have sullied this team's good name and stolen their opportunity to enjoy their inspiring accomplishments," said Steele. "Don Imus did not engage in free speech; he engaged in racist and sexist speech. His comments were deplorable, unacceptable and reprehensible. He should resign effective immediately."
