ASSELTA TO VAN DREW: WHICH AMONG THE 1,201 PIECES OF LEGISLATION YOU INTRODUCED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS DEALS WITH ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?
(VINELAND August 15) -- First District Senator Nick Asselta --responding to Democrat Jeff Van Drew’s remark that Asselta is “full of beans” for calling for changes to New Jersey law regarding the treatment of illegal immigrants -- today called on Van Drew to point out which of the 1,201 bills introduced by the Assemblyman since he was first elected with Jim McGreevey six years ago deal with illegal immigration.
“Last week and yesterday, my running mates and I offered constructive proposals for changes to New Jersey law to deal with the social stresses caused by the Federal and State governments’ failure to enforce immigration laws,” said Asselta. “My Democratic opponent’s response was to declare me and my running mates, and I quote, ‘full of beans,’ before going on to suggest, ‘They jump from hot-button issue to hot-button issue,’ and then suggesting I haven’t done anything on this issue.
“To which, I will simply respond: Another way of saying ‘they jump from hot-button issue to hot-button issue’ is to say that we are responding to what we’re hearing and being asked about as we go door-to-door all over the First District. So rather than issue press releases about Federal issues over which we have little control and about which few people are talking, we are offering positive, constructive, issue-oriented proposals for addressing issues of concern to our constituents, as our constituents themselves define them.
“Moreover, I’d like to ask Jeff if he could please point out for us which -- of the 1,201 bills he has introduced since the time of his election with Jim McGreevey six years ago -- deal specifically with some aspect of the problems caused by illegal immigration? After all, he’s introduced all kinds of important legislation, such as a bill extending the terms of Assemblymen from two years to four, and even a bill to save taxpayers’ money by having the State Government stop printing reports on paper, and instead publishing them online instead – a bill which, coincidentally, just happened to cost the taxpayers $3,000 to print up, on paper.
“The ball’s back in your court, Jeff. Or, should I say, ‘The can of beans is back in your court, Jeff?’”
