Ariyan declines TV forum with Cardinale
By Matt Friedman, PolitickerNJ.com ReporterJoseph Ariyan is raising a lot of money for his race against GOP State Sen. Gerald Cardinale, but he’s not ready to go head-to-head with the veteran incumbent in a joint TV appearance.
The two 39th district candidates were invited to appear this weekend on Channel 9’s New Jersey Now. Cardinale accepted, but Ariyan, a first time candidate, declined.
Cardinale said he was mystified that Ariyan would turn down the opportunity to appear on a New York TV program, especially since New Jersey candidates constantly complain that New York and Philadelphia TV ignore local campaigns in New Jersey.
“It’s strange. We don’t get a lot of opportunity to be interviewed by New York broadcast media. I can’t fathom why someone who purports to want to get out there and meet the people would not take advantage of that,” said Cardinale.
Jennifer Chirco, Ariyan’s campaign manager, said that the format of the show was not a debate, and that the network gave them less than two days’ notice for the taping, which would have taken place this afternoon. She added that as a brand new and not yet well-known candidate, Ariyan’s schedule was too booked between his law firm and his campaigning to participate on such short notice. Chirco said she offered to reschedule the taping in the future.
“Maybe that Cardinale just shows up on a dime with as much notice as we had, that’s just a reflection of how he’s using his time,” said Chirco.

What a joke.
The candidate obviously isn't ready for "prime time" and would rather let the earned media do the talking. He's obviously bad on his feet and doesn't know the issues well enough to tread in the deep water of a political campaign. How a challenger can arrogantly turn down a forum speaks volume to the BCDO strategy which is to let there money advantage dictate the tempo of the campaign. The doctor already has the challenger bleeding.

It says a lot when a challenger turns down a golden opportunity to show his stuff. He is either brain dead, camera shy or has no clue about the issues. I think is the latter. An empty suit with money is a danger to us all.

Ariyan gets an opportunity to face off the Senator and turns it down flat. Seems that the folks at BCDO want their ward to follow the McNerney strategy... let the millions do the talking and say nothing. Cardinale is not Hank McNamara. He won't let this guy off the hook that easily.
Ferriero's Money
Of course Ariyan doesn't want to debate yet. He wants to hold the public debate via direct mailers and TV ads. His campaign coffers are filling quickly, so why accept risky, balanced press where he has to engage in an honest debate when he knows he can afford to fund biased, one-sided campaign fliers and negative attacks? With Ferriero's money behind him, Ariyan doesn't need to fear a lack of funds - instead, it's a balanced and honest debate he fears.

Gerry should show and ask the station to set up an empty chair for the challenger. If the guy shows, fine. They have the exchange of views.
If not, Gerry should point out that the unoccupied chair was preserved for one Joseph Ariyan, a Democrat who is asking people to give him a lot of money for nothing, and, moreover, is utterly unwilling to face his opponent and talk about the issues.
If it gets to be October and this putz still refuses to show up for a debate, Gerry should insist that the station place a straw-stuffed dummy into a Cowardly Lion costume into the chair, and periodically have the moderator ask it simple questions, like, "How many houses are there in the New Jersey Legislature?"

If you are a challenger and facing an incumbent who's been there for a while, and you might have a shot, becuase he is not considered safe YOU MAKE TIME to debate him..not run away from him.

Ariyan: Ferriero finger puppet
This guy was carefully chosen by Ferriero. The objective is obvious, to have three solid senators he controls without question (Sarlo, Coniglio and Ariyan). He can't control or rely on Weinberg's vote plus this free's him to get more appointments through the legislative process while pressuring Weinberg to vote with the Bergen caucus. Anyone from Bergen who becomes a senator MUST be a Ferriero puppet because of the power of senatorial courtesy.

We speak about it so openly. What "courtesy"? allowing each other to circumvent the checks and balances in the constitution? Can any politico cite this "Senatorial Courtesy" statute and tell us how it does not violate the separation of powers or maybe just defend the practice for us?

I thought Ariyan was going to be a credible candidate, but alas it seems he is intimidated by Gerry Cardinale's considerable experience and political knowledge. In 1980 it greatly hurt Jimmy Carter when he refused to debate Ronald Reagan and John Anderson, and I have a feeling Ariyan it will be taken the same way.
