AMODEO AND POLISTINA: CORZINE MUST END HIS FASCINATION WITH AN ABSURD 800 PERCENT TOLL HIKE

GOVERNOR ADMITS HE IS STILL CONSIDERING TOLL HIKE AND BORROWING SCHEME THAT HE SEEMINGLY ABANDONED AFTER PUBLIC OPPOSITION

Governor Corzine must kill his plans to raise tolls 800 percent and borrow $40 billion with false promises of reducing state debt, Assembly members John Amodeo and Vince Polistina, both R-Atlantic, said today.

"One of the few times Governor Corzine seemed to govern according to what the people wanted was when he dropped his so-called monetization plans, but now we have learned that was just a deception and that the governor has been secretly planning to bring his absurd plan back to life," Amodeo said. "I cannot understand his obsession with toll increases and his reliance on borrowing when we have given him a plan to reduce state debt without worsening the nation's heaviest tax burden."

After the Corzine administration raised tolls on the Atlantic City Expressway by 50 percent last year, the governor wants to revive his monetization plan that at one time projected annual commutation costs on the Expressway to rise from $275 to $2,227 by 2022. The governor is adhering to his convoluted scheme despite strong opposition from the public and Republican legislators, who have proposed reducing state debt through a comprehensive plan that entails restricting government's ability to borrow what taxpayers cannot afford to repay and other responsible budgeting reforms.

"Any faint hope that Governor Corzine will ever be able to understand what havoc his misguided Wall Street fiscal polices have done to New Jersey families and businesses is gone after learning he is still pushing this insane plan," Polistina said. "No matter how much the economy rebounds, I cannot envision a scenario where families will be able to afford a $2,000 toll increase - just to get to work - in little more than a decade.

"After he has taxed people out of their homes, the governor wants to make sure they also pay through the nose when fleeing New Jersey," Polistina added.

800 PERCENT TOLL HIKE

Once reelected there would be nothing to stop Corzine from going ahead with his toll hike plan, and spending tomorrows taxes today. This is stealing from the future. We should have toll free roads, this way we can get more funds from the federal government to maintain them, and if need be increase our motor fuel taxes, which people can do something about by buying new fuel efficient cars and trucks. And the motor fuel tax promotes energy saving and clean air, and reduce our overseas purchase of oil, leaving more dallors to be spent at home.
