September unemployment rates reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) today indicate that New Jersey’s 9.8 percent rate continues to far outpace its regional neighbors. Assemblyman Scott Rumana believes the latest numbers show the state may not be as well positioned for an economic recovery as Governor Jon Corzine is leading people to believe. “The current unemployment rates are particularly embarrassing for New Jersey as compared to surrounding states,” said Rumana, R-Passaic, Bergen and Essex. “Governor Corzine speaks about ‘incremental progress’ occurring in New Jersey, but there is no evidence to suggest that we are making progress in getting people back to work under his leadership. The numbers tell a much different story.” The latest rates show the overall unemployment percent for the northeast region at 9.0, with Pennsylvania (8.8), New York (8.9), Delaware (8.3) and Connecticut (8.4) all having substantially lower levels than New Jersey. “The governor will try and spin this news in some favorable light, but the fact is we are not anywhere near a recovery,” continued Rumana. “The totality of taxes on both families and business that he has pioneered is having an effect on the state’s ability to bounce back. With a poor business climate, people are moving from New Jersey to other states that offer an opportunity for work. “It is noteworthy that our unemployment rate is nearly a full percentage point ahead of our closest neighbor,” remarked Rumana. “That is not incremental. It is significant. Governor Corzine’s strategy for turning around our economy has not materialized, despite his efforts to convince the public otherwise.” ### On the Net: www.njassemblyrepublicans.com NJ Assembly Republicans on Facebook

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep.
