RUMANA: COURT RULING WORSENS CORZINE’S AFFORDABLE HOUSING MANDATES

ASSEMBLYMAN RUMANA SAYS PROPERTY TAXPAYERS WILL NEVER SEE RELIEF FROM CORZINE’S AND COURTS’ HOUSING MANDATES

Assemblyman Scott T. Rumana, decried a recent court ruling that forces towns to allow affordable housing limits even if they have already met their obligation.

“There is no more refuge from Governor Corzine’s onerous affordable housing mandates that are based on faulty science and threaten sound environmental policy and large property tax increases,” Rumana, R-Passaic, Bergen and Essex, said. “Even those towns that have found a way to meet the governor’s unrealistic quotas now face the risk of someone taking them to court to build more.”

Rumana said he is planning legislation to address a recent court decision that ruled Eastampton could not deem a nonprofit organization’s application to build affordable housing “not inherently beneficial.”

“Why bother having local land use boards if officials in Trenton or judges in a courtroom can impose their will over the decisions made at the local level with best interests of property taxpayers in mind?” Rumana said. “Because of this ludicrous ruling, I plan to draft legislation that will clarify that local officials can control their own destinies despite interference from Trenton and the courts.”
