DOHERTY: CORZINE APPROVES TRIPLE THREAT ATTACK ON RATEPAYERS, BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT

PREVAILING WAGE BILL SIGNED BY GOVERNOR CORZINE WILL RAISE COSTS FOR RATEPAYERS AND BUSINESS, AND DETER CLEAN ENERGY INITIATIVES

A new law signed today by Gov. Jon S. Corzine to mandate prevailing wage for any construction project funded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities will only worsen problems for the state’s ratepayers and businesses by driving up costs for clean energy projects just to curry favor with representatives of organized labor, Assemblyman Michael J. Doherty said today.

“New Jersey residents will pay higher utility bills and small businesses will be forced to find work in other states because of Governor Corzine’s insistence that government, not the private sector, dictates what people should be paid,” said Doherty, R-Hunterdon and Warren, a member of the Assembly Labor Committee. “The governor failed to stand with New Jersey citizens and businesses in his zeal to score political points with representatives of organized labor.”

Doherty, who was blocked by Democratic legislators in his efforts to exclude small businesses from the prevailing wage requirement of A-3372/S-2340, also noted that the law will increases costs on projects related to green energy, which will further stymie efforts to develop green jobs.

“New Jersey was one of just eight states that lost so-called green jobs over the past decade. Raising costs for these types of projects will not reverse that trend,” Doherty said.
