MALONE: CORZINE’S ELECTION-YEAR BUDGET CEMENTS GRIM FUTURE FOR NEW JERSEY MIDDLE CLASS TAXPAYERS

MALONE: CORZINE’S ELECTION-YEAR BUDGET CEMENTS GRIM FUTURE FOR NEW JERSEY MIDDLE CLASS TAXPAYERS

REPUBLICAN BUDGET OFFICER SAYS LAWMAKERS MUST BEGIN WORKING IMMEDIATELY AND ON BIPARTISAN MANNER IN FISCAL YEAR 2011 BUDGET

Assembly Republican Budget Officer Joe Malone issued the following statement today in response to Governor Corzine signing the Fiscal Year 2010 budget:

“This budget is filled with the same deception, deferral and diversions that have placed New Jersey on the brink of bankruptcy. Governor Corzine hopes it will buy him some political points for November, but regardless who is governor next year the people of New Jersey will be paying for the mistakes in this budget, and those of the past seven years, for years to come.

“The governor has taken promised property tax relief from more than one million middle class property taxpayers and is raising taxes by more than $1 billion when many New Jerseyans have lost their jobs, homes or retirement savings.

“This has been the worst budget season I’ve experienced in 16 years as an Assemblyman, but the governor’s tact of back-loading the state’s bills such as school aid and pension payments while front-loading its revenue, such as the federal bailout, puts New Jersey residents in an even worse position for next year.

“Now that the ink is drying on the Fiscal Year 2010 budget and the heated rhetoric is subsiding, lawmakers from both parties should sit down soon and responsibly begin the sobering discussion of how to reform this state’s atrocious spending habits and get our residents out of the mess Trenton has made.”
