A bill (S-208) sponsored by Senator Diane Allen (R-7) that would help homeless veterans find affordable housing was approved by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee today. The legislation will require that a portion of the rental assistance grants awarded under the state section 8 rental assistance program be reserved for graduates of ‘Veterans Haven’ a vocational and transitional housing program for homeless veterans.
“It is unfortunate that we have homeless veterans in our state , but I am honored to provide whatever assistance is needed to help those who have sacrificed so much to keep us safe,” said Allen. “I hope that homeless veterans will take advantage of this program, and that it will help provide the stability needed for them to live more prosperous lives.”
According to the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs there are among New Jersey’s homeless population an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 veterans. ‘Veterans Haven’ can only provide housing for 54 homeless veterans for a 24 month period.
“When you look at these numbers you see that the state’s existing programs are inadequate for assisting homeless veterans,” added Allen. “That’s why it’s important we provide other opportunities for homeless veterans to live in affordable housing. Sponsoring this legislation is the least I can do to help those who have served their country so honorably.”
