The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is up with its first television advertisement targeting Republican Leonard Lance, a 30-second spot tying the Flemington state Senator to Trenton.
The ad began running on cable stations in the 7th Congressional District last week, with a media buy totaling about $116,000.
“Watch Leonard Lance do the old Trenton dance,” an announcer says. “Dancing to the tune of big oil, pocketing thousands in campaign cash. Lance has those Trenton moves, voting against property tax relief for us but voting himself a 40 percent pay raise, sponsoring a state budget that gave us nearly $3 billion in new debt that paved the way for higher taxes.
“A new Lance dance in D.C.?” the ad concludes. “No thanks.”
Lance is competing against state Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) for the seat of retiring U.S. Rep. Michael Ferguson (R-New Providence). Democrats have identified the race as a pickup opportunity, with the DCCC reserving about $1.8 million in air time in the district. The committee has already taken Lance to task in mail pieces distributed to residents in the district
“This is a classic political game of misdirection. The DCCC is worried because Linda Stender almost lost her own reelection to the State Assembly just last year because of her abysmal tax-and-spend record,”
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain said in response to the ad. “Linda Stender is a spender and that is why Democrats in Washington are running to her aid.”
A Stender campaign-commissioned poll released this week showed the Democrat leading Lance 36 percent to 33 percent.

This ad is horrible
If Lance wins, he can thank the DCCC.
Joke...
Lance has pushed for lower taxes and debt and even had his committee stripped from him for oppeing more debt. This ad smells worse than the stink coming from Stender.
Linda Stender, Tax and Spender!
Is the whole "Lance/Dance" thing supposed to counter the "Stender/Spender" rhyme? If so, it's just not as funny.
And how can Stender rant about Lance's contributors when she has more campaign money than Lance does? Wouldn't that mean that she has more special interests to dance for?
"I figure people drift toward liberalism at a young age, and I always hope that they change when they see how the world really is.”
- Johnny Ramone
Considering how much money
Stender has, is this the best that she can run? No wonder the polls are are tight as they are. Waiting for attacks on Tom Hsing next?
Let me guess
when reached for comment Lance said "I respectfully disagree with the content of that television advertisement."
Dumb
Just a dumb ad. The DCCC should hire a new consulting company.
Lance's losing campaign
What on earth has Leonard Lance done to merit support for his congressional bid? I applaud him for toning down some of the partisan rhetoric and hackmanship in Trenton, but this is someone who has no vision of federal issues and is not worthy of one's support. On the federal level, where Lance's knowledge of the issues run the gamut from "barely competent" to "completely clueless," we know that Lance supports the doctrine of endless war in Iraq and that he invariably favors the same Bush-Cheney economic policies that have led to record deficits and financial meltdowns.
That the DCCC is already hitting the airwaves against Lance, while Lance has $200k or so in the bank, barely enough to keep his floundering campaign alive, is testimony to the state of the race; anyone who thinks that Stender, who should be commended for her work on global warming in the state assembly, isn't the favored candidate in this race is suffering from some form of conservative dementia.
Once again
Once again Martin I must call you out on your astounding lack of knowledge. One wonders whether you even bother to read anything before spewing your poorly-researched pablum on the public. "... he invariably favors the same Bush-Cheney economic policies" - do you even live in this state? Lance has been, time and time again, the foremost opponent of unnecessary spending. Every time you post I think to myself "no, he can't be seriously doing this again?" I would stop countering your comments, but I fear that someone may take your comments seriously, and that's a bigger threat than Stender could ever be. Please I ask you humbly, take a respite from commenting on this site until you do some hard, fact-based research in this race. Then, when you come back and are willing to discuss substantive issues in this race, people will be willing to listen to you. Until then, I won't hold my breath.
do your research; get a clue
NJPantherFan: Your understanding of federal issues is, well, comparable to Lance's: very little or nothing. In your rebuttal, if one can call your substance-less post that, you offer no ideas, no reasons to support Lance, that is, besides your own lame platitudes and conspicuous brown-nosing of this poorly-financed, poorly-run congressional candidate.
Since your posts are lacking in anything substantive, let me try to make amends and offer some, as you say, "hard, fact-based research in this race." When it comes to gay and lesbian rights, Lance's positions are indecipherable from Bush's, as when he voted against something as basic as civil unions and spoke out against the Supreme Court ruling as going too far. I've also never encountered anyone who considers themselves "pro-choice" yet has never voted for anything, as far as my research indicates, that is pro-choice legislation. Lance even voted for parental notification, which is antithetical to a pro-choice position. (Those are facts, NJPantherFan, and something tells me you are ignorant about such views of Lance's). For more information on Lance's view on social issues and whether it comports with his record, please see my article here:http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=8447
So much for the myth of Lance being a "moderate," eh? (Note: For a "moderate" Republican, please see "Chaffee, Lincoln.")
On economics, Lance, ever the GOP partisan, has voted for Whitman's boondoggle budgets, thus exacerbating state debt, while voting against Corzine's budget tightening measures. Lance, like George W. Bush, who is having a fundraiser this week for him and that guy who is running against Adler, opposes financial regulation, and therefore voted against the pro-middle class Paid Family Leave Bill. (Again, facts, NJPantherFan; facts are our friend). Again, Lance supports tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, as does his ideological brethren, Bush and Cheney.
On the Iraq War, there is no discernible difference between Lance and Bush. Lance favors no timetable for withdrawal, no benchmarks for the Iraqi government, what Lance called in an August interview "an artificial deadline" -- that's Lance-speak for a long-term unilateral occupation of Iraq.
My final advice for NJPantherFan and any other Lance apologist would be simply to do your research on Lance; he's really a social conservative who follows very traditional right-wing Bush Republican policies. My other piece of advice would be to have a stiff drink or two ready on the night of 4 November for when your candidate loses to Stender.
Lance responds in kind
Cue Music - Sir Mixalot "I like big butts and I can not lie You other brothers can't deny That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist And a round thing in your face You get sprung" Voiceover: "Seems Linda Stender is doing a dance of her own -- one where she is trying to keep you from seeing her baggage. Linda Stender wants you to look at Leonard Lance's Trenton voting record so you won't take a look at her abysmal record of higher taxes and uncontrolled spending. Shake that thing, Linda Stender. Shake that thing."
