Administration rushes to issue summer employment checks
By Max Pizarro, PolitickerNJ.com ReporterNewark Mayor Cory Booker personally apologized to those young people employed by the city who have not received their checks in a timely manner, and promised to try to rectify the problem in speedy fashion.
Today, the 2,100 children employed this summer by Newark Works went to Symphony Hall for a pizza party on the mayor. Inside there were processing stations set up for those kids among them who have not yet submitted key information such as social security cards or birth certificates. The goal was to get as many of the 600 remaining unpaid children their checks by the weekend.
"It’s an issue that should never have happened," said Councilman Carlos Gonzalez, who was helping to coordinate the massive effort. "There’s no reason why you shouldn’t get paid on time."
Gonzalez said there had been some problems with disruptive behavior on the sidewalk in front of the old symphony building, but said he was generally pleased with progress inside.
Donna Jackson, who burst into a City Council meeting on Wednesday to demand the children be paid the same day, mustered a begrudging thanks.
"Do we appreciate the effort, yeah, but it could have been more organized," she said.
