Trenton) -- John Currie, Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, issued the following statement regarding the passing of Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich, the longest-serving County Sheriff in New Jersey history:

"I am saddened by the passing of Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich. In his 13th three year term, Sheriff Froehlich, a fixture in his community, was working hard to improve the quality of life in Union County before many of its residents were even born.

"Although the length of Sheriff Froehlich's service distinguishes him, it is the gravity of his responsibilities, his innovative solutions to law enforcement problems, and his constant dedication that made him such an extraordinary career professional."

"For example, among his many accomplishments, the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (S.L.A.P.), which Sheriff Froehlich launched, successfully balanced the interests of nonviolent offenders and the needs of municipalities, reduced incarceration and labor costs and, thereby, saved taxpayers millions of dollars."

"New Jersey is a better place thanks to Sheriff Froehlich's unwavering efforts to keep the residents of Union County — children, seniors, victims of domestic violence, as well as his fellow law enforcement officers — safer and more secure. I know he will be greatly missed."
