Greenstein Tapped to Open Columbia University Environmental Conference

NEW YORK – Senator Linda Greenstein, D-Middlesex/Mercer, recently opened a prestigious environmental conference on sustainability at Columbia University.

Greenstein, who is vice chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Energy Committee, offered her take on sustainability and the environment in her opening remarks at a conference geared toward taking a holistic approach to battling global warming.

“Building a sustainable future for our environment is not only the smart thing to do but it’s the only thing to do for the future of the planet we leave our children, grandchildren and succeeding generations,” Greenstein says.

The symposium attracted movers and shakers from the environmental science, government and business fields. Participants included a senior strategic planner from defense contractor Lockheed Martin, the director of Columbia Law School’s Center for Climate Change Law and climate scientists from the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory.

Still others included United Nations officials and a senior vice president for world-class piano maker Steinway & Sons, which still hand crafts its product in an Astoria, Queens factory that operates on geothermal energy.

“It’s important to have cross-disciplinary conversations because the climate change problems we face as a nation are multidisciplinary in nature, said conference organizer Monica Pham., an attorney with a Master’s in public policy. “I wanted to help chart a path to a healthier environment by bringing together an array of leaders to have a discussion on where we’re going and how to get there.”

The title for the conference -- FUELING ENERGY, FINANCE AND PUBLIC SERVICE: Collaborative Solutions for Environmental Protection, Energy Efficiency & Resiliency in Today’s Ever-Changing World -- reflects a collaborative approach to climate change.

Pham, a former Plainsboro resident whose parents came to America in the 1970s as refugees from the Vietnam War, now works on Capitol Hill drafting legislation for a Silicon Valley Congressman. She says she chose Senator Greenstein to open the conference because she was impressed with the Senator’s background and her leadership on environmental issues.

“Senator Greenstein through her leadership position on the Senate Environment and Energy Committee is doing great things for New Jersey,” Pham noted. “I wanted her to shed light on some of the issues facing us.”

“The Senator is a dynamic speaker,” Pham added. “She got this important conference off to such a positive start and things just flowed from there.”
