TRENTON – George Norcross says the reason he’s backing Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s bid for the U.S. Senate is simple.
“He’s going to win,” Norcross responded during a Statehouse news conference Monday when asked by a reporter to explain his decision to back Booker.
The powerful South Jersey Democrat explained Booker and him are better suited ideologically compared to the other Democratic Senate candidates. But more to the point, Norcross said, Democrats need to back someone who will win the seat.
“I think we need to put the best candidate forward,” he said, adding, “The candidate who’s going to win the election.”

“It’s not the first time, it’s not the last time, that a nominee with an issue is going to come up. But you can’t just say, therefore no one else goes forth. That nominee has nothing to do with these nominees, and the governor made a substitution for him anyway.” - state Sen. Ronald L. Rice (D-28)- PolitickerNJ
