Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Sen. Barbara Buono is weighing in on Gov. Chris Christie’s latest town hall comments.

Buono issued a statement Wednesday accusing the Republican governor of playing “politics of division,” following his comments the previous day about children in failing urban schools being robbed of a future by their elected leaders.

“Instead of addressing the big challenges facing our inner city communities – struggling schools, soaring income inequality, stagnant wages, and high unemployment – Gov. Christie’s only answer is to play the politics of division.  That’s not leadership, and it’s not the way to move New Jersey forward,” Buono said in the statement.

Buono also criticized Christie for essentially calling Speaker Sheila Oliver out by name during the Paterson town hall, telling residents the people they elected to serve them are the very ones blocking improvement in public schools.

“Speaker Oliver has been a powerful voice on behalf of those who most need one in Trenton,” Buono said. “I’ve been proud to serve with her, and I stand with her in fighting to lift our public schools rather than drain them of the funding they need.”

"Potentially, we can get this done, because it's important. We get it. We understand it. But there are issues. There's the speedy trial component. How are we going to pay for this? How is the risk-assessment piece of it going to be done?" - Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32), on bail reform.
