SCHEPISI: BAIL REFORM VITAL COMPONENT OF VIOLENCE PREVENTION

As New Jersey lawmakers debate how to best prevent violence in society, Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi today said legislation she has co-sponsored that would deny bail to dangerous offenders is a common sense solution that should be voted on immediately by the General Assembly.

Schepisi, R-Bergen and Passaic, is a sponsor of ACR-153, a bipartisan resolution that would allow voters to decide whether New Jersey should deny bail for dangerous defendants. The measure, which was unanimously released by the Assembly Judiciary Committee last June, but remains stalled, mirrors current federal law.

“Protecting our residents is one of government’s basic responsibilities. It stands to reason that we can help reduce violence in our streets and keep all law abiding citizens safer by keeping dangerous offenders behind bars,” said Schepisi. “Allowing dangerous defendants to post bail so they can continue their violent behavior is ludicrous. If we are to be successful in protecting our men, women and children, this common sense measure, which has lingered in legislative limbo for far too long, must be part of the equation.”

The 39th Legislative District lawmaker said the legislation should be put to a full vote during Thursday’s General Assembly session when legislators will vote on more than 20 gun reform bills.

Other sponsors include Assembly Republicans Donna Simon, Dave Rible, BettyLou DeCroce and Alison McHose, and Assembly Democrats Ralph Caputo, Sean Connors and Annette Quijano.
