NEWARK - Gov. Chris Christie said today he takes Newark Mayor Cory Booker at his word that he is not going to run for governor.
Christie said that he believes Booker who said this week that he feels remaining mayor of Newark would be better for now than giving that post up to run for governor in 2013.
He said he hasn’t spoken to Booker, either by phone or text message, which is how they normally communicate.
In the long run, Christie said, he really doesn’t care who he’ll run against, saying the Democratic Party will put up somebody and he’ll just have to make his case for re-election.
State Sen. Barbara Buono is the only declared Democratic gubernatorial candidate so far.
Appearing at a ministry to announce the clemency of a woman who successfully fought drug addiction, Christie said his appearance in Booker's city a day after Booker announced he wouldn't run against him was a mere coincidence. He said the decision to hold the event here was decided earlier in the week.

"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."- Nelson Mandela
