Assembly Resolution Honors NJ National Guard Exceptional Service during Superstorm Sandy

Assembly Democratic Members Hail Servicemen/women as Hometown Heroes

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assembly Democrats Ralph Caputo, Cleopatra Tucker, Gilbert L. “Whip” Wilson, and Joseph Egan sponsored to honor the invaluable contribution of the New Jersey National Guard during one of the worst weather-related disasters in nation and state history was approved by an Assembly panel on Monday.

According to the National Guard website, the largest numbers of troops were out in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. National Guard support included providing communications; shelter and engineering; evacuation and security; high-water vehicle; high-water search and rescue; power generation; food distribution; debris removal, transportation and delivery of essential equipment and supplies.

"The outstanding troops of the New Jersey National Guard are our 'Hometown Heroes'," said Caputo (D-Essex). "Their presence during the storm provided a great sense of security and hope for many residents across the state. We extend our most sincere thanks to their unselfishness and duty to the citizens of New Jersey."

"The National Guard saw no duty beneath them," said Tucker (D- Essex). "When there was a need, it was met - rescue, food distribution, or providing security. New Jersey weathered the storm largely due to the troop's exemplary training, skill and commitment to our communities."

"Working around the clock to save thousands of stranded New Jerseyans, whether in their homes or on flooded roads," said Wilson (D-Camden, Gloucester). "The New Jersey National Guard is to be commended by the people of this state for their efforts and dedication."

"The rapid response of the National Guard was invaluable to helping our residents' survive the storm," said Egan (D-Middlesex, Somerset). "They answered the call with exceptional coordination and management. Their continued involvement is integral in the rebuilding of our New Jersey."

The Assembly Military and Veterans Committee approved the resolution (AR119), 5-0. It now heads to the Assembly Speaker for further consideration.

Quote of the Day

Quote of the day

"That's state money and the speaker has never raised an objection to that, and now all of a sudden she objects to her own bill. She's objecting on a basis she hasn't objected before on the TAG Grant program. Let's face it everybody, this is just politics. It's election year and it's politics." - Gov. Chris Christie, on Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-34).
